John D Hawkins was born to the late Grace Collins and John Hawkins senior on August 24, 1929. John considered himself a Bostonian but he lived in Medway for over 40 years with his beloved wife Adelaide (who is deceased). The last three and a half years he resided at the Stone Rehab and Senior living facility in Newton Massachusetts where he passed away on September 18, 2020.

John was the youngest of five children and went on to live a very productive life. He was loved and admired by many because he was supportive, helpful, loving and industrious. In his 91 years he accomplished many things and made a number of names for himself. He was known as “Feet”, Uncle John, Dad and Grandpa.

John was a talented hard worker from a very young age. He enjoyed cooking and listening to music. He later went on to serve in the Marines, where he served with honor in Korea as an officer and marksman with the United States Marine Corp. After being honorably discharged in 1953, he worked for a barrel company in Chelsea before starting his own cleaning business (Coastal Maintenance Services/M&H Cleaning), which was one of the first black businesses in the New England area. This was not an easy task in the 70’s, but John was determined to be successful for himself and those who depended on him.

After years of service and hard work John retired and sold his businesses and found a new home in Martha’s Vineyard. He enjoyed spending his summer vacations there with his family. The memories made throughout the years will always be cherished and appreciated by his large family and loved ones. He is survived by his brother in laws, Jose Joyner, Hewitt Joyner (and wife Marsha Joyner). His children, Lawrence Woodley (and wife Bella Fahrni), Dorothy Sneed (and husband Claude Sneed), Katherine Jones, and Jeane Hawkins. His son Lassiter “Chris” Woodley and wife Faith Woodley (both deceased). And his best friend Uncle Donald Mitchell Senior and family. He will also and always be loved by all his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

On September 28, 2020, John’s viewing and funeral service will be held at the Riley-Antoine Funeral Home (171 Humboldt avenue, Dorchester, MA 02121). The Viewing is from 10am-10:30am, followed by a video presentation and discourse at 10:45am. On this same day John will be buried with his beloved Adelaide at Bourne National Cemetery. He will be dearly missed.
