A beloved and blessed child, Emma Jean Magnolia Powell (a.k.a. “Favorite”). She was born on Tuesday, March 9, 1948, in Marion, S.C. Emma was the sixth child born from a blissful marriage between the late Deacon Batie “Jack” Israel Sr. and Mother Queenie M (Foxworth) Israel.

Emma Jean – as she was affectionately called “Ma”, “Grandma”, “mommy” “bow legs’ and to her sister Mary, “Beulah” was promoted from Earth to Glory on Monday, May 18, 2020 at The Carney Hospital, Dorchester MA. Her Lord called her from labor to reward, to rest, and be at peace until that great and Notable day.

Emma received her formal education at Johnakin High School, where she played the clarinet in the Johnakin Marching Band under the direction of Mr. Kennedy. The Family relocated to Boston, MA in 1962 and she continued her education at the James P. Timilty Jr High and Girls High School.

Emma fell in love with her one and only, and in July, 1966 was joined in holy matrimony to Clarence Powell Jr. From this union were born 6 children; Sandra, Angela, Charles, Clarence, Edwin and Shawannika (Shey).

The Israel Family religious foundation is “Holiness”. In 1950, Deacon Batie “Jack” Israel and Mother Queenie M. Israel, the principal Founders of Highway Church of Christ, Marion, S.C., under the leadership of the late Bishop R.F. Davis Sr., raised their children in the church. In Boston, Emma was under the leadership of Bishop Archie Foxworth Sr., (Pentecostal Household of Faith) until in 1972 when the Lord laid on Deacon and Mother Israel hearts to go back to their “roots” – and the two of them, along with the children, started the Highway Church of Christ, (later known as New Life Restoration Temple) in Boston, MA with leaders, such as Bishop Liston Page Sr., Bishop Dwight Dove, Bishop Bernard N. Bragg, and Bishop A.L. Foxworth Jr (Grace Church of All Nations). Having a strong “religious” foundation, and under tutelege of great leaders, Emma knew that she needed to “go back to her foundation---Jesus Christ. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior, received the baptism of the Holy Ghost and was baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. From that point on, Emma lived a Holy and Sanctified life.

In 2009, Emma’s son, Pastor Clarence Powell lll, was ordained Pastor of Abundant Life Deliverance Temple. She removed her membership from Grace Church of All Nations and became one of Pastor Powell's first members. Emma served faithfully in several capacities within the church. She was a member of The Voices of Victory, President of the Usher Board, Mother of the church, Missionary,

Church cook……Ohhh, did I say the Church cook??? With Emma in the kitchen, you knew that you were going to have a GOOD meal. She introduced a lot of people to her “Sweet Macaroni and Cheese”! Yes, Sweet Mac and Cheese! And “DIRTY RICE”!!! When people traveled to Boston, they would call her and ask her to make, FRIED CHICKEN, MAC AND CHEESE, STRING BEANS AND RICE. (A simple dinner, but not simple to them)!

Emma was noted for her deliciously prepared southern-style cooking, her delectable baked cakes, pies and homemade fresh brewed sweet tea. Every holiday, Emma had to make her sister-in-law, Willie, not one, but two Lemon Meringue pies. She had a “passion” for cooking and no matter who you were she would feed and house you if you were in need.

Emma’s house was always packed with people, eating and just good ole talking. Her home was a safe haven to all. Her trash talking self was unmatched and she was quick with weapons! Emma was very comical and some of her favorite sayings were “Youz a lie” “That’s what I know” “If you don’t stop acting up, I'm gonna whoop ya tail til it roke like okra”. She was definitely a “People’s Person”. Emma had a heart of gold and a way with people. She assumed the role of mom, friend, and confidant to so many. One thing for sure, Emma’s family and friends will miss those 6 am birthday calls and picking up the phone to call her not only for a laugh, but to get her oh so famous recipes, especially Melvina and Joyce.

Emma enjoyed and loved gospel music. She was always “Thrilled” and “Elated” when her son, Pastor Powell would sing and preach. There is one song in particular that Emma would always sing, “There’s a Leak in this Ole Building” and her soul has got to move. We didn’t quite understand why that song, but now we do. She had to leave here and go to a building not made by man’s hands.

Emma was preceded in death by her father, Deacon Batie “Jack” Israel, mother, Mother Queenie Israel, sister, Bessie M. Cox, two brothers, Batie Israel Jr. and Charles L. Israel Sr., mother in law, Beatrice Myers and sister in law, Maxie Lee Cole.

Emma leaves to cherish all of her sweet memories and legacy to her children, Sandra (Bishop Anthony) Hamby of SC, Angela Powell, Charles (Tina) Powell, Clarence (Patti) Powell, Edwin Powell and Shawannika Powell all of Boston, MA, Nakesha Fernandez of Rhode Island, one step daughter Latisha Kenner, 26 Grandchildren, 31 Great Grandchildren, 1 Great Great Grand, her siblings, Janet Smith of Boston MA, Mary (William) McGill, of NJ, James (Cynthia) Israel of Hyde Park, MA, Melvina Israel of Lawrenceville, NJ, Joyce (James) Steele of Lawrenceville, GA, Marshauna Elliott, of Hyde Park, MA and Daryn Elliott, Jacksonville, FL, sister in laws, Dollie Israel, Willie Israel, Daisy M Jones, Jean McCaa and Jackie Harris, best friend, Susie Mathis, a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, a very special cousin, Albertine Garrett, and a host of family, church family and friends.

Emma, Mommy, Ma, Grandma, Sister, Aunty, Lil Girl, My Favorite Girl, and Friend,
may you rest in peace!

Who’s Gonna make the DIRTY RICE???

There is no-one like my Emma, She was a dedicate woman of God. She never treated anyone differently. Bernt and I were talking about hen he was a toddler and the Sunday school class made cards for their grandmother , when he was told to give his card to his grand mother ,he ran straight to Emma.. thats because she had that heart of love for everyone and all the children could feel her embracing heart.. He would always. referee to her as grandma . Our family are praying for your family in h name of Jesus be blessed.
