Rita Faye (Wilson) Cosey (74) of West Medford died unexpectedly on May 13, 2020 at Massachusetts General Hospital. Rita was born on April 9, 1946 in Boston, Massachusetts, to the late Ollie Henri and Leon Wilson Sr.

Rita was raised in Cambridge and went to the Houghton School. She attended Cambridge High and Latin School until the family moved to West Medford in 1962. She married John Jay Cosey Jr. of Cambridge in 1964.

Rita graduated from the Department of Mental Health School with an LPN and earned a BSN from Boston College. She was a devoted member of the healthcare community, working as a nursing supervisor, nursing coordinator, director of infection control, and regional MAP coordinator at the Fernald State School for many years. She also served in the National Guard. Even in retirement, Rita remained engaged in the medical field, becoming self-employed and teaching safe medication administration. She loved her career, and especially working with individuals with disabilities.

Family was Rita’s core. She admired her big brother Leon and would say “he’s the only one that’s known me my whole life” and fondly referred to her little sister Sharon as ‘noodles’. The English language lacks words adequate to describe Rita. She was selfless, delighted in giving joy to family and friends, welcomed all into her home with an open heart, and was always known for her tremendous kindness. She was actively involved in charity work, and donated generously to the homeless.

She was the epitome of style and set a high standard in how she presented herself, her hair, makeup and clothes had to be just so. She loved fashion and expressed herself through it, and, of course, received a steady stream of complements.

Rita’s favorite pastimes included reading, shopping, (including a healthy addiction to QVC) and spending time with family and friends. She was an active member in the West Medford Reunion Committee, involved in all aspects of the planning stages and enjoyed every moment.

She is survived by her loving children Shawna Deynce Cosey and John Jay Cosey III, both of West Medford; her brother, Leon Wilson and his wife Sherry Wilson of Quincy: her sister Sharon Boyd and her husband Lary Boyd of Brockton; her grandchildren Alexis, Ashley, Aloni and Ayana; and her great-grandchildren Austin and Amelia; and many cousins including Karlyn J. Headley and E. Sonny Headley with whom she resided, nieces and nephews and their families. She also leaves to mourn lifelong friend of sixty-nine years Catherine Queen and long time friend of thirty-nine plus years Noreen Eagan, as well as, the love of her life, Lawrence Peters.

Due to the current pandemic with COVID-19, and the restrictions issued by our State Government, we ask that you please be conscious of the capacity limit that has been set forth. Note that all viewing and celebration of life services will be limited to the allowed number of visitors at any one given time. I was always in awe of so many people in the neighborhood we grew up in. Rita was beautiful and a bad mamajamma driving through. in her red convertible. The family is some of the many pillars in our community blessed to be part of it. RIP,
