Sarah Priscilla Dyett affectionately known as Syl passed away on August 7th at the age of Eighty Seven after a brief stay in the hospital.
Syl was born in Cork Hill Montserrat on April 8th 1931 and was the second child and second daughter of Thomas and Alicia Dyett’s five children. When our father passed away, Syl as a teenager exhibited leadership skills and was regarded as the matriarch of the family.
Syl received her early education at the St. Mary’s Government School and after leaving school she sought and obtained employment with Thomas H. Kelsick Ltd where she worked for a number of years, after which she entered the Government Service and worked in the Legal Department until the time of her migration to the United States of America in 1961 where she worked with the United States Trust Company for the next 30 years until her retirement in 1996.
Syl was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church Choir. She was very quiet and unassuming and she was able to further her studies which equipped her for the jobs which she held.
On one occasion when the choir master asked her to sing a solo part in a Cantata, she told him that she could not make it but she actually made it and sang her favorite piece “were you there when they crucified my Lord.
Syl loved her family and was very protective of them. Notwithstanding her quiet nature, she was very jovial at times and was quite outspoken so you knew exactly where you stood with her. It was a shocking and unfortunate event when on August 7th she succumbed to her illness.
Left to attend the celebration of her life are her sisters Evelyn Dyett and Dorothy Jackman of Boston Ma, her brother Fred Dyett and wife Carmelita Dyett of Saint Vincent, her nieces Lorraine Riley, husband Peter and 3 Children of Boston, Junie Cabey and husband Roy Cabey of Canada, Dorothy Shoy of New York and nephew Noel Matthews of Birmingham, England, many relatives and friends Please join with us in wishing her farewell and we thank everyone who took the time to pray for her and to visit her.
