Lori Cox (Smith)
Lori Anita (Smith) Cox (more affectionately known as Lo, Lolo, Foxy Coxy, and Grandma) was born on October 4, 1964 in Boston, Massachusetts to the late Dr. Bishop Joe L. Smith and Gladys Smith. She attended the Boston Public Schools, and received her high school diploma from Boston High School. She was married and had two daughters from that union, Tacara and Shontae.
While working full time and raising her children, Lori took classes to further her education. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Human Services from Springfield College in 2002, and a Master of Science in Management from Lesley University in 2004. Lori worked for Boston Public Schools as Assistant Director of Countdown to Kindergarten, Director of the Roslindale Welcome Center, Interim Senior Director of Welcome Services, and most recently as the Director of the Roxbury Welcome Center. Prior to that time, she worked for Federated Dorchester Neighborhood Houses, Inc. as the Director of Dorchester House Preschool.
Lori loved helping people and she was proud to serve the families of Boston throughout her career. Outside of work, Lori has always been known as a fashionista who loved to shop and spend time with family. Over the past five years, however, the thing that brought her the most joy was spending time with her dear grandchildren, who she loved with all of her heart. Lori liked simplicity and could light up a room with her contagious smile. She enjoyed dancing, singing and listening to all genres of music. Lori was a leader who truly believed in treating others as one would want to be treated. On Tuesday, March 20th, Lori was granted her heavenly wings after her battle with cancer.
She leaves to continue her legacy, her two daughters, Tacara Kirby (Jason Kirby) and Shontae Cox of Boston, MA; four grandchildren; Landon, Cameron, Lorin, and Jackson; mother, Gladys Smith; seven sisters; Vera Sauls (Derrick) of Raleigh, N.C., Priscilla Riley (Tony), Gwendolyn White (Hubert), Reneica Smith-Sanders, Joella Floyd (David) of Dallas, TX, Sandra Cosby (Khaya), and Adrienne Graves (Napoleon) of Cary, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Tanja Smith (the late Joe L. Smith, II). She is preceded in death by her father, Dr. Bishop Joe L. Smith and brother, Pastor Joe L. Smith, II. She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her second family, the staff of the Boston Public Schools Welcome Services department. Although our hearts are heavy, Lori would remind us to be grateful for the time we had with her and embrace the moments we share with one another.
