Obituary for Lillie Haynes-Riggs
Lillie Belle Haynes-Riggs, aged 86, died peacefully on November 18, 2017 at Seasons Hospice Milton Inpatient Center, after a brief struggle with pancreatic cancer. Lillie was born April 12, 1931, in Madison, Florida the daughter of Henry Groover and Mappie Akins.
Lillie attended Madison County High School, in Madison, Florida. She later moved to Boston in 1959, with her 5 boys. In 1971, her only daughter Mamie was born to the love of her life Rufus Riggs and in 1972 they were connected in holy matrimony.
In addition to raising her 6 children she was also a homemaker. Lillie learned to bake at the early age and learned early on how to nurture and care for her loved ones as well as others. She worked early morning hours until the late evenings for others, and then came home to care for her own family members. Up until the day she took her last breathe she would be sure to check on each of her sons and grandchildren daily.
As the family matriarch, Lillie was the glue that held the family together. Selfless, carefree, prideful, loving, unwavering faithful woman of God, she woke up many mornings listening to old gospel hymns on her radio, that strengthened her and at the same time inspired her grandchildren to embody that same encouraging vigor, that God also provided for her. She was a rare gem and definitely an angel in disguise.
Lillie was an active member of Old South Church, in the South End of Boston, MA. It was here that she met some of her closest friends, which she enjoyed shopping, talking, and hanging out with. Lillie thoroughly enjoyed shopping at the Watertown Mall and especially eating at the Old Country Buffet, which her favorite meal was the fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and collard greens.
Lillie is survived by her two sisters, Mamie and Sister, and her husband Rufus Riggs; sons, Charlie, Curtis, Albert, Willie jr, Lonnie and daughter Mamie, of Boston, MA; two nieces Yvonne & Lucy; one nephew Eugene aka Bay on grandchildren Shandra aka (Tamekka), Ebony, Marcus, Rashaud, Brandon, Brittany, little Lonnie, Tiffany, Christopher, Stephanie, Eric, Justin, Maya, Kendreia, and Johnasia grandchildren-in-law Geno, Lamont, LaDawn, Latwanda, Lateeya, Lakeyia, 19 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren and number of other relatives and close friends.
