Maritza Johnson was born on June 6, 1981 in Boston, Massachusetts to Carmen Hernandez and Carlos Johnson. She enjoyed an adventurous childhood doing things such as making mud pies, beating up her brother’s friends and wanting to join the circus. Growing up Maritza attended the John P Holland Elementary School and the Timothy Middle School. As a teenager, Maritza attended Madison Park Vocational High School. Following high school some of Maritza’s endeavors included modeling, bartending and dancing. Maritza was well known for her funny, caring and straight forward personality. She was a beautiful soul who loved deeply and would fight passionately for what she believed in. She embraced being the life of the party while also encouraging others to self-advocate for themselves. Unifying family and friends while creating priceless memories was her area of expertise. She dedicated her life to the Lord in her twenties. Maritza's hobbies included listening to music (specifically Prince and Tupac), and planning family gatherings. She looked forward to the holidays and spending time with the family. During these times she was infamous for reminding us all that she was the oldest and they should "respect their elders" (specifically her), despite being just one year older than most.
On May 3, 2002, she was blessed with her eldest daughter, Miracle. She initially met her future fiancée Angel Velazquez during their toddler years and established an inseparable bond from that moment forward. Maritza and Angel were blessed again with their daughter, Heaven followed by another blessing a son, Malachai, two years later. After the birth of her children she dedicated her life to becoming a devoted mother and loving fiancée. During this time, she took great pride in learning to cook (beyond her signature dish of cornbread). Maritza and Angel's love for music greatly inspired and influenced their children. She patiently encouraged her children to pursue their musical talents that ranged from playing the piano, drums and singing.
Maritza gained her angel wings on February 24, 2017, when the Lord called her home. She was proceeded in death by her paternal grandmother Carmen Johnson and fraternal grandfather Ismael Hernandez. She will be deeply missed by her fiancée Angel Velazquez, her mother, Carmen Hernandez, (Hector), Her brother’s Donnell Ruffin (Michelle), Macho. Her sister Maribel Andrade (Jose). Her daughters Miracle Johnson and Heaven Velazquez, her son Malachai Velazquez. Her memory will live on through her nieces, Sharell Griffin, Xeyannia Ruffin, L'Tamra Weeks, Keyhra Figueroa, Olivia Andrade and nephews Donnell Ruffin Jr., Jerbre Griffin and Ethan Figueroa along with a host of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. She will live on in our hearts forever and never be forgotten.
